What is AWS Class ER308/308L SAW & Flux?

Alloy 308 SAW & Flux is a welding wire considered to run on straight current, inverted division, and irregular current. Alloy 308L wire is designed for welding the same chemical composition in the cast and wrought forms. Prior heat process and interpass temperatures of not less than 300°F (150°C) are optional during welding. Post-weld heat management should be between 1100°F (629°C) and not to surpass 1150°F (620°C), as high temperatures may affect in hardening these wires as these are used for welding ASTM CA6NM castings or similar materials, as well as light-gauge 410, 410S and 405 base metals.

Weld metal placed by this wire is further customized to have less Cr and more Ni than weld metal deposited by E410 electrodes. The purpose is to eradicate ferrite in the microstructure, as ferrite has a damaging effect on the mechanical features of these alloys. The final post-weld heat treatment should not exceed 1150° (620°). Higher temperatures can affect reconsolidating due to untempered martensite in the microstructure following cooling to room temperature.
